Who Is God? — Understanding Elohim

In Scripture, God is often identified by the Hebrew word Elohim, which means “powers” rather than a singular limited being. This term reveals divine order and authority, not confusion.

Elohim refers to:

  • The Most High God (supreme authority)

  • Jesus Christ (the sent Son and expressed image)

  • The angels (ministering spirits who execute God’s will

All operate in rank, order, and unity, not equality of power.

  • Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heaven and the earth.”

  • Genesis 1:26 – “Let us make man in our image…”

  • Psalm 82:1 – “God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.”

  • John 10:34 – “Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?”

  • Colossians 1:16 – Christ involved in creation, visible and invisible

  • Wisdom of Solomon 12:1 – “For thine incorruptible spirit is in all things.”

  • 2 Esdras 7:70 – Angels appointed to observe and minister

  • Sirach 17:17 – God set rulers over every nation

How This Works:

The word Elohim does not mean multiple gods competing for power. It means multiple divine authorities operating under one supreme God.

Just like:

  • A king has generals

  • A judge has officers

  • A commander has ranks

God governs through order, not chaos.

Christ’s Place in Elohim

Jesus Christ is:

  • The only begotten Son

  • The express image of the Father

  • The head under God

Scriptures

  • Hebrews 1:3 "Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power"

  • 1 Corinthians 11:3 “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”

  • John 5:30 – Christ does nothing of himself

Christ is not an angel, but above them, commanding them.

The Angels’ Role in Elohim

Angels are:

  • Ministering spirits

  • Executors of God’s judgment

  • Messengers and watchers

Scriptures

  • Psalm 103:20 “Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.”

  • Hebrews 1:14 “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

  • Daniel 10:13 but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.”

They carry out God’s will but do not receive worship.

Real-World Example:

Think of government

  • One Constitution

  • One Supreme Authority

  • Multiple branches and officers

Different roles, same system, one rulership.

That is Elohim.

Why This Matters for New Members

Understanding Elohim helps new believers:

  • Read Scripture without confusion

  • Understand Christ’s authority properly

  • See divine order, not contradiction

  • Avoid false doctrines that deny structure
